NSR/LMS Horsebox
These diagram 1 horseboxes were built by the North Staffordshire Railway at Stoke on Trent from 1912. The Knotty was advanced for its time, in providing automatic vacuum brake for all of its vehicles, with at least some of the horseboxes having through pipes for Westinghouse brakes for journeys over other companies' lines. All of the 1912 batch of horseboxes had electric lighting, although the disposition of the fittings on the vehicle has not yet been established with accuracy. The NSR adopted the J Stone & Co system of lighting which included a dynamo and dual battery switching method so that whilst one battery was being discharged in one direction, the other was receiving a recharge. In coaching stock, this equipment was carried under the guards compartment, with roof connections to all the coaches in the rake. It would follow that the horseboxes would of necessity require sole equipment, in view of their meanderings over other companies' metals.
The horseboxes were originally fitted with 3ft 7in Mansell disc wheels, although later plain disc wheels of the same diameter may have been fitted.
The kit consists of an etched brass body and chassis with whitemetal detailing parts and sprung buffers. A pre-formed brass roof is supplied. The chassis has rocking W-Iron suspension.
Wheels and couplings are needed to complete the kit.
