The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 6 wheel coaches in our range formed that company's last series of 6 wheelers and were built in the same period as some of their first bogie coaches. Construction was between 1882 and 1899 at Newton Heath mainly during the time F Attock was Carriage and Wagon Superintendent. They were all fitted with the vacuum brake and steam heating and some were also fitted with Westinghouse air brakes to allow through running over the North Eastern Railway and the Caledonian Railway. Initially a 32ft underframe was used subsequently lengthened to 33ft. Most of our kits are of the later 33ft underframe variants.
These six wheelers coaches were initially used on main line expresses, but the arrival of bogie coaching stock meant that they were soon relegated from front line service to secondary main line and branch line work. As the brake thirds became surpluss to need the L&YR converted some of them into various types of van or truck, such as CCT's and Fruit Trucks. In 1916 the Barry Railway bought 30 of these six wheelers from the L&YR, these duly passed into Great Western railway ownership and were finally withdrawn between 1924 and 1930. The LMS inherited some 860 L&YR six wheelers in 1923, but by 1932 this number had been reduced to 21 in public service. When the coaches were withdrawn by the L&YR and LMS they were still relatively young and several of them found employment in departmental service where they survived until the mid 1950's.
The kits have an etched brass underframe and body. The underframe has rocking W-iron compensation. The roof is pre-formed in brass. Most detail castings are in whitemetal, although the vacuum pipes, steam heat pipes and Westinghouse brake pipes are all cast in brass for strength. The buffers are not sprung. Door handles and grab rails are also provided as brass castings. Wheels and couplings are not included.
