Large Boilered Coal Engine

George Hughes decided to build a batch of twenty 0-8-0s with the same size boiler as on the 4-6-0s but with a slightly modified heating surface. This batch was completed in 1910, but because of the difficulty in assembling and fitting the Joy valve gear with the heaviest motion parts yet used, an order on 18th June 1909 to fit it to all 0-8-0s was not carried out.
A further batch of 20 similar engines was built in 1917, differing in having lighter motion work. Though the tractive effort was the same as that of the original Aspinall engines whose boiler, once thought large, was now described as small, these new 0-8-0s had a much greater work capacity. In 1911-1913 eighteen of the Aspinall 0-8-0s were rebuilt with this boiler.
When rebuilt in 1923 the Aspinall 0-8-0 number 1427 was rebuilt with superheated boiler and large side window cab. Twenty other engines fitted with large cabs were Aspinall numbers 86, 190, 201, 406, 461, 463, 709, 738, 827, 877, and 1491. Hoys numbers 373, 436, and 1440, and Hughes numbers 265,281, 1547, 1563, 1612, and 1646.
The appearence of the standard superheated 0-8-0 was identical with the unsuperheated type, except the chimney was nearer to the front of the smokebox.

The loco and tender bodies are etched in brass, with a pre-rolled etched brass boiler. The chassis is etched in nickel-silver and is designed to be easy to compensate or spring, having half etch hornblock cutouts, and jointed coupling rods. The boiler fittings are a mix of turned and cast brass, the remainder being high quality whitemetal castings. Hughes pattern sprung buffers are also included, these can be swapped for LMS standard if required..
Motor, gears, motor mount and wheels are required to complete the kit. For compensating or springing we recommend that you use the FourTrack Models cast hornblocks and alignment jigs.
