John Aspinall's last locomotive design, a powerful 0-8-0 began constructions in November 1899 some five months after he had been appointed General Manager and H.A. Hoy to position of C.M.E. The first two engines appeared in April 1900. The first forty were built with six wheeled tenders of the same size as the enlarged Barton Wright tenders of the 4-4-2s. In 1902 Hoy designed an eight wheeled non-bogie tender of 3600 gallons and 5 tons of coal capacity. The wheels of this tender were 3'71/2" dia. with the flanges of the two intermediate pairs turned thinner to reduce friction on curves. Suspension was by double elliptical plate springs, and a newer stronger buffer was also fitted. These tenders were very smooth running units and a large number survived the engines by many years and were put into service all over the LMS system as sludge tanks. The 8 wheeled tender is supplied in this kit.

The loco and tender bodies are etched in brass, with a pre-rolled etched brass boiler. The chassis is etched in nickel-silver, and is designed to be easy to compensate or spring having half etch hornblock cutouts, and jointed rods. The boiler fittings are a mix of turned and cast brass, the remainder being high quality whitemetal castings. The buffers are brass turnings with turned steel heads. Aspinall buffers are normally supplied, but the Hughes pattern or LMS standard can be supplied instead.

Motor, gears, motor mount and wheels are required to complete the kit. For compensating or springing we recommend that you use the FourTrack Models cast hornblocks and alignment jigs.
