LSWR/SR/BR Horse Box
Some 350 16' short horseboxes were built to diag 1000 between 1887 and 1907. Running Nos 2501 to 2819 covered various styles, all generally similar in layout though all ended up with outside beading, most surviving into SR stock. After 1934 the Southern removed the beading and sheeted over the sides with the exception of the drop door. 138 vehicles survived nationalisation, the last being scrapped in 1955. Early vehicles had a through vacuum pipe only, others also had a through Westinghouse pipe. Steam heating pipes and either side brakes didn't appear much before 1914.
Unlike the 21' horseboxes which ended up as gas lit, the short boxes were oil lit even in BR days. Additionally, although the longer vehicles may have had end steps, the short horseboxes never did.
The horseboxes were originally fitted with 3ft 6in Mansell disc wheels, although later plain disc wheels of the same diameter may have been fitted.
The kit consists of an etched brass body with outside beading and rigid chassis with whitemetal detailing parts and sprung buffers. A pre-formed brass roof is supplied.
Wheels and couplings are needed to complete the kit.
