GNR 521/536, LNER/BR J6
(Choice of tender)
The J6 marked the transition between Ivatt and Gresley, the first 15, the 521 series, being built at the end of Ivatt's days with GNR and the later 95, the 536 series, being produced in a modified form by Gresley between late 1912 and 1922. The locomotives were known among footplate staff as A engines after the GNR power classification. The last two locomotives were withdrawn in June 1962.
The Gresley series of locomotives had the boiler set further back in the frames allowing the cab to be shorter and the fireman's task to be easier. The initial batch had sandboxes between the frames feeding the driving wheels and in the cab feeding the trailing coupled wheels. On the 536 series a sandbox was added to the leading splasher feeding the leading coupled wheels.
The other noticeable difference between the two series when first built was the chimney, the 521's having a plain chimney and the 536's a built up pattern 7/8 in. shorter. By grouping the chimneys were of the later type.
The loco and tender bodies and chassis are etched in brass with the coupling rods in nickel-silver. There are a large number of alternatives in this kit such as two sets of main frames, cab options, smoke box choices, GNR or LNER chimneys and domes, and no less than three tenders to choose from; - Stirling, Ivatt Horseshoe, or Ivatt Self-trimming.

A large proportion of the fittings are brass with just a few in high quality whitemetal. Sprung GNR buffers are supplied as standard in the kit, but can be swapped for LNER Group Standard if required.
Wheels, motor, motor-mount and gears are required to complete the model. Both the locomotive and tender chassis can be compensated or sprung using our cast hornblock system.
