GNR/LNER/BR Ivatt Horseshoe Tender
HISTORY
One of Ivatt's earliest class A tenders with a capacity of 3170gallons of water. In 1899 a version of it was introduced with a water scoop fitted, this reduced the capacity to 3140 gallons. The wheelbase continued the traditional GNR 6ft 6in + 6ft 6in spacing. Class B versions of both types were also built with capacities of 3670 gallons and 3640 gallons. Both class A and class B tenders were fitted with 4ft 2in diameter wheels. In later years many water scoop fitted tenders had the scoop removed with a resultant increase in their water capacity.
Information on GNR tenders can be found in Vol 1 of the RCTS series on Locomotives of the GNR
THE KIT
The kit has an etched brass body and a separate etched brass inside chassis. The castings are whitemetal apart from the vacuum pipe which is cast brass. The chassis can be built either rigid or compensated. Only bearings for a rigid chassis are included in the kit, but it can be easily compensated using proprietary hornblocks, we suggest the use of our own, see the Accessories section of this handbook. Wheels need to be purchased separately, we can supply Slaters finescale wheels.
