Construction of class M began in 1892, and all the class originally had extended smoke boxes to ease conversion to compound working if required. As this was not undertaken, the smoke boxes were shortened, starting with No.1623 in October 1903. However, the locomotives were not long in this condition, as they received extended smoke boxes once again, this time for superheating, and No.1633, in March 1914, was the first to receive this. Also as built, class M had steamchests for the slide valves outside the smokebox, instead of in the conventional place between the frames.

The class Q locomotives were very similar, and construction began in 1896, No. 1871 being the first. The main differences with class M, were the polished brass capped chimney, and the clerestory roof.

It is clear that when first built, both classes of locomotive worked on the main line pulling the best trains of the day. However, they were soon displaced by newer and larger classes, and began working on lesser tasks. When withdrawal began in the 1930’s, they were scattered all over the former N.E.R. system. Some had even reached London on special workings.

The kit produces either the NER M class or NER Q class, later under the LNER they became D17/1 & D17/2

The body is etched in brass and the boiler is supplied ready rolled. The frames, etched in nickel silver, can be compensated, but hornguides and bearings are not included, if you wish to compensate we suggest our own cast hornguides and bearings.
The fittings are a mixture of high quality whitemetal and lost wax castings.

The kit comes with our own NER 15" head taper bodied buffers, these can be exchanged for NER 13" head taper bodied buffers,NER parallel body or LNER Group Standard buffers if required.
